It was our honor to be chosen as the builder for the prestigious Southern Living’s 2024 Idea House on fabled Johns Island, South Carolina.

Construction of this Low Country gem is all about heritage and bringing the styles, sensibilities and traditions of the past into modern interpretations that resonate with sophisticated buyers.

We felt privileged to co-create this masterpiece with Allison Elebash of Allison Elebash Interior Design, Kirsten Schoettelkotte of MHK Architecture, and landscape designer Scott Parker of DesignWorks.

Everything about this home is classical Carolina… from the old oak trees to the historic southeast raised farmhouse facade. From its gleaming white exterior, tabby concrete (crushed oyster shells) walkway to copper lanterns gracing the front door, charm abounds in every detail.

Using a split, open floor plan, the home was constructed with a large great room housing the living and dining areas, along with the gourmet kitchen. A long gallery hallway just inside the front door leads to spaces on either end, including an outdoor living room and the primary bedroom on the ground floor.

Old and new are blended in a way that feels fresh, elegantly coastal, and unforgettably Southern. The 2 story windows highlight the freestanding, white oak staircase that seems to float like a cottonwood seed from one floor to the next.

The large sliding glass doors in the dining area of the great room brings the beauty of a picturesque marsh landscape indoors. Organic, regional artistic details like wall sculpture “murmurations” along with muted colors and textiles bring a Carolina zen feel to every inch of this special home.

On the second floor, floor to ceiling palmetto wallpaper in one bedroom and updated wood paneling in the den give off a cozy, homey vibe to this decidedly elegant yet unstuffy dream home. And, its overall unique floorplan unites each space while retaining its airy, coastal feel and charm.

One of our favorite features of this truly South Carolinian home? The outdoor living room. This room brings those famous warm Atlantic breezes in while keeping the dreaded “no-see-ums” and other pests out.
